The project was carried throughout two classes, humanities, and chemistry. The humanities aspect of the food project focuses on personal food ethics and recognizing that eating is an agriculture act. We were given three essential questions to focus our attention on throughout the project. How does food in America get from the source to your plate? How do we characterize America's relationship with food? What are the political and economic factors that shape this relationship? And How would you characterize your personal “food ethics”? What factors influence this ethic? How does your personal relationship with food impact your happiness and well being? We read Michael Pollan’s book, “The Omnivore’s Dilemma”. Along with smaller articles written by many other great authors. The chemistry aspect of this project focused on how recognizing the similarities between a chef and a chemist. Why do foods, and a certain amount of foods affect the meal when cooked/prepared? All in all the focus what to understand what makes up our food and the chemistry behind cooking it. We spent time planning and cooking meals for taste tests. Along with breaking down the chemistry of the food we consume.
All in all, we participated in a collaboration effort in preparing a meal that shows the ethics of the food and the chemistry of how it was prepared.
The interdisciplinary nature of the project impacted my learning by allowing me to understand and have an interest in what is being taught. Learning more than one thing about a general subject gives me more opportunity to give my interest and effort into one smaller aspect. Learning the ethical side about food while learning the chemistry of it gave me a boost that helped shape my personal ethics. Seeing the chemistry in action and experiencing in through taste tests helps me understand personal recipes and cultural food, which in a interdisciplinary project helps me connect to the other half of the lesson.
Some main takeaways from this project were recognizing the effect of the industrialized matter of food. My eyes have been opened to finding more sustainable and reasonable efforts to put when it comes to saving, growing and reusing food. Other takeaways with my academic ability were time management and managing the content learned in each class. My thoughts on food have definitely changed and progressed, I know see eating as an agricultural act.
